Glasewitzer Straße, 18273 Güstrow, Deutschland - on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, a serious incident occurred in Güstrow, which draws attention to the dangers in connection with e-scooters. A 21-year-old man stabbed a 32-year-old e-scooter driver to rob his cell phone. The attack happened at around 10 p.m. in Glasewitzer Straße when the perpetrator called for a knife to hand over the cell phone that was attached to the handlebar of the scooter.
The 32-year-old initially refused to publish his cell phone immediately. As a result, the attacker injured him with a cut on the arm before taking the cell phone. The perpetrator is already known to the police, which significantly influences the investigation by the Güstrow criminal police. Fortunately, the victim's injuries only suffered superficial cuts.
The police are now investigating the case in order to clarify further details about the background of the crime and the perpetrator.
The risks in road traffic
This attack throws a light on the safety risks in road traffic, especially in terms of e-scooter. In 2023, the number of accidents with personal injury that concerned e-scooters rose by 14.1 % to a total of 9,425 accidents. The number of fatalities even doubled from 11 to 22 compared to the previous year. Younger people are often affected, with 41.6 % of the victim drivers under 25.
In addition, serious injuries were registered in 1,220 people, while 8,911 people suffered minor injuries. The most common causes of accidents include incorrect use of roads and alcohol influence. In view of these statistics, it becomes clear that the security of the e-scooter users and the risks in road traffic must be further discussed in order to prevent such incidents.
The e-scooters have been approved in German road traffic since June 15, 2019 and are also subject to strict regulations that are intended to ensure the safety of the drivers and the other road users. Nevertheless, it remains important to raise awareness of these dangers, especially in urban areas where road traffic is denser and the likelihood of conflicts increases.
