Digital education in Emden: Delays with internet connections until 2025

Digitization in the schools of Emden is a lengthy process. Three out of six schools are currently facing the challenge of waiting on fast Internet by 2025. The reasons for these delays are complex and primarily affect the technical requirements that are required for a nationwide internet supply. Michael Groeneveld, the city's department head, has now confirmed the situation in a message.

Overall, the city of Emden is trying to equip its schools with internet connections faster as part of the federal digital package. But reality looks different. While the Max Windmüller-Gymnasium and the high school in Borssum have completed all the necessary work on time, the situation at Emder IGS, BBS 1 and the Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium (JAG) remains. Here the city plans to extend the deadline at the Ministry of Education to give the work more time.

technical hurdles and structural challenges

The laying of network cables is mentioned as the main reason for the delays. This work requires a lot of time and precision, which significantly complicated the planning of the digital infrastructure. Groeneveld reports that "PEU à Peu" is upgraded in parts of the schools, but this is distributed over the current year. The city's officials hope that at least at the end of the year, but at the latest by March 2025, all work could be completed, so that the schools in question finally benefit from the fast internet.

Interestingly, the focus is not only on the affected schools. There are also work on many other educational institutions that are not part of the digital package. At the moment at the Grüner Weg primary school, the internet connection is being active, while the elementary school on Wall still has to wait for its completion. "But there is already internet at every school," emphasizes Groeneveld, but the speeds are not yet everywhere at the desired level.

speed was also required for other aspects of digitization. Recently, funding from the digital pact has recently been released, and Groeneveld said that it was possible to secure these funds through the quick actions of its employees. On the evening of June 30th, the opportunity to submit applications was used on the evening of June 30th. This happened at a time when the town hall celebrated a company party. Two employees sat down on their PCs in the middle of the night to upload the applications. This short -term campaign secured the city 90,000 euros for the purchase of digital tablets, a big step towards digitization, even if it had previously been committed to commitment.

Overall, the developments in Emden show that digital departure in schools does not run smoothly. Nevertheless, work is done on several fronts to improve the infrastructure. The city gets to the bottom of these challenges, even if the time pressure is high, and tries not only to overcome the technical hurdles, but also to improve the learning conditions for the students.
