Emden faces a significant change in the gastronomic landscape, since the former car wash on Auricher Straße of a Kentucky Fried Chicken branch will give way. Mayor Tim Kruithoff has confirmed the official granting of the building permit and thus signals progress that not only expand the city's culinary diversity, but should also address young people.

The closure of the old car wash

The car wash for over 40 years, known as Clean Wash, recently closed its goals after a sudden closure. Senior boss Susanne Oetjegerdes said that the decision at the end of the company was also due to difficulties in procuring spare parts. The originally intended closing date was at the end of August. With the closure, however, the possibility of revitalizing the property, which everyone involved sees as a positive turn.

The plans for the KFC restaurant have already been supported by the young population of Emden. Mayor Kruithoff mentioned that young people have repeatedly asked whether another fast food provider could be located in the city. This development is viewed as a great profit for Emden because it makes the city more attractive for young people and enrich the gastronomic offer.

The choice of location and future developments

The new fast food branch will be created on the motorway exit 31 Emden-Mitte and will therefore be placed strategically cheaply. Michael Sappok, the senior project manager of the Westersteder group of companies Van Mark, emphasizes the importance of the situation: "Emden is a top location, especially because of the motorway connection and the proximity to the ferries." The start of construction is planned for the end of 2024, with the old car wash first.

renovation work as a key factor

The path from the idea to implement was lengthy, as Kruithoff noted. The comprehensive renovation of the Rewe market nearby has contributed to the attractiveness of the location. It was only through the acquisition of the terrain by van Mark that a crucial milestone could be achieved, which initiated the possible changes. Sappok praises the constructive cooperation with the city and sees development as a step in the right direction for the region.
