Schwanenteich redesign in Emden: challenges and future visions
In the city of Emden, the future of the Schwanenteich area has been discussed for some time. This area is not only an important place to recover for the citizens, but is also a piece of history that has grown dear to the citizens. Despite the fundamental decision to make the site fit for future requirements, there are currently some difficulties that delay the renovation of the site.
The city administration faces the challenge of securing the financial means for the planned removal and redesign of the swan pond. A first tendering procedure for the project had to fail in the beginning of the year due to severely increased material and construction costs. These cost crossing led to the fact that the originally defined budget of one million euros was not sufficient, which the city swings over the project like a sword of Damocles.
financing questions and planning in the focus
It remains unclear which specific cuts may need to be carried out in the project. At the request of the editors, there has been no clear answer as far as whether the most creative ideas of the citizens from the public call from 2021 should be at the back. At that time, the citizens had submitted numerous suggestions for the future design of the Schwanenteich area, based on their wishes and needs. It is in the stars whether these are incorporated into the planning process or whether cuts have to be made.
Especially the technical challenge of drainage of the site poses problems with problems. Due to the specific soil conditions in East Frisia, it is important to find a solution that is both technically implementable and financially portable. Therefore, the administration is currently in an internal examination phase in order to better assess the feasibility with regard to drainage and general redesign.
In the meantime, the city confirms that the development of the popular Schwanenteich area remains a goal. This area is often frequented by the residents and visitors, especially during the warm season when it offers a pleasant quality of stay. In view of the changing climatic conditions, a proper redesign of the swan pond could also contribute to improving the local urban climate, which underlines the importance of the project.
The municipality hopes to soon receive positive impulses and to find a realistic solution to realize the plans. However, as long as the question of financial feasibility and the technical challenges have not been resolved, the starting signal for the redesign of the Schwanenteich site remains unclear. So at the moment it says: "The lake is still resting", with the outlook on the fact that at some point there could be a budget start if all conditions are right.
