Open day: Discover the new bog headry in Füchtenfeld
The changes in the landscape of Füchtenfeld are impressive. At Siedlerstraße 2, where peat was still dismantled by 2015, a flowering moor sheep has now established itself with around 1,000 sheep. This impressive transformation is celebrated with an open day on September 15, 2024, to which the County of Bentheim nature conservation foundation cordially invites you.
During the day that takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., numerous activities await visitors. At various stands, you can not only find out about the role of the sheep farm, but also learn a lot about the moor and nature conservation. Guided tours through the Moor-Venland nature park provide insights into the fascinating moor landscape. In the sheepfold, the guests have the opportunity to experience the various sheep breeds up close, while the little visitors can look forward to numerous hands -on activities. The physical well -being is also taken care of and ensures that the day will be relaxed and informative for everyone.
The legacy of peat extraction
The decision to redesign the site into a bog headline was an important step for nature conservation in the region. The Nature Conservation Foundation Grafschaft Bentheim acquired the Torf and Erdenwerk from Ehrenborg & Fortmann in 2015. Through targeted conversions, it became a place where the pasture industry and nature conservation go hand in hand. The "Mäh4moor" project was launched to sustainably maintain the moor landscapes by grazing with sheep. This task is taken over by Norbert Rüschen and his team, who manage the areas of the Dalum-Wietmarscher Moores from April to November.
A special highlight in the shepherd year is the shearing in December when the sheep is sheared. This process not only has practical reasons, but is also of cultural importance and symbolizes the rhythm of nature that changes with the seasons. At Christmas time, the shepherds are looking forward to the first lambs to herald the new year.
Availability and arrival
Various options are available for arrival to the moor sheep: Visitors can easily arrive by car, bike or on foot. The guided bike tour that the general German Bicycle Club (ADFC) offers from Nordhorn is particularly interesting. This tour not only offers a sporting opportunity to get to the event, but also the opportunity to discover the picturesque environment of the bog.
The financing of this valuable project is supported by numerous sponsors, including the state of Lower Saxony. The Veenland-Moor Schäferei Rüschen works closely with the state moor administration and the nature conservation authorities of the districts of Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim to ensure that both sustainable management and nature conservation are strengthened.
The open house day is an excellent opportunity not only to get to know the latest development in Fchüchtenfeld, but also to learn more about the important role of sheep farming in moor care. It is a meeting of the inheritance of peat extraction and modern environmental protection measures that focus on love for nature.
