Construction site update: A46 bridge exchange in Wuppertal starts on September 2
Wuppertal. From September 2, 2024, important construction work begins on the A46 motorway in the Wuppertal-Nord cross. These are necessary to replace road crossings at a bridge that leads the A46 over the A43. The work aims to increase the security of the bypass after several emergency repairs had to be carried out in the past that could only be provisional solutions.
For the duration of the construction work, the traffic is directed from the A1 towards Cologne to the A46 towards Wuppertal/Düsseldorf. In addition, the traffic is also affected by the B326 to the A46, since the detour also leads past the construction site in one lane. This could lead to increased traffic jams and longer travel times.
Need to work
The need for construction measures results from the construction of the bridge. The road transitions are special steel structures that are designed to compensate for the length changes in the structures that occur through temperature fluctuations. These transitions are regularly exposed to high loads and therefore always require maintenance, repairs or, in the worst case, a complete exchange.
The work to renew the transitional constructions at the ends of the two bridges is expected to continue until the beginning of October 2024. The long -term safety and stability of the bridge are in the foreground, so that the measure is considered unavoidable.
The Westfalen motorway has already taken numerous measures to ensure traffic safety and keep the effects of the construction work as low as possible. Nevertheless, drivers are asked to adapt to possible delays and, if necessary, plan alternative routes.
It remains to be seen how traffic flows will develop during the construction work and which adjustments are necessary to minimize traffic jams and disabilities. In any case, it is advisable for all affected people to find out about the changed traffic tours in advance.
