FDP plans new organ donation rules: More donors due to cardiovascular arrest!
The FDP in the Bundestag is planning a decisive change in the definition of death for organ donation, which could significantly change the conditions for the removal of organs. It is new to the fact that the cardiovascular arrest is the basis for self-determined organ donation in the future-so far it was necessary to prove brain death. This measure aims to increase the number of organ donations and at the same time to take into account the individual right of self -determination in connection with one's own death. A corresponding position paper is to be adopted on Tuesday that enables potential donors to document their will through an additional field in the organ donation register.
The group's health policy spokesman, Andrew Ullmann, emphasizes that from a medical point of view there is no universal standard to determine death. Death due to persistent circulatory arrest should be equated with brain death, but more easily and secure. This change could help to meet the rapidly increasing demand for organs: Last year, 965 people donated organs, while 8400 are on waiting lists.
