Discover the secrets of the forest floor: Info day in Schellbronn
In the Enzkreis there will soon be an exciting opportunity for nature lovers and thirsty for knowledge: from September 13th to 15th, 2024, the German Forest Days will take place. This event, which was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is all about "Forest and Knowledge". A highlight will be the event of the Enzkreis forestry office on September 15 with the topic of "forest and soil".
In order to give visitors a deeper insight into the fascination of the forest floor, two soil profiles were recently created in Neuhausen-Schellbronn. These profiles enable the participants to experience the different layers and properties of the forest floor up close. The experts present included Michael Gerster, the forestry manager, as well as district manager Felix Ost and Holger Nickel, department for agriculture.
The importance of the forest soils
forest floors are not only habitat for numerous organisms, but also essential storage for carbon. They contribute significantly to biodiversity and play a crucial role in the natural cycle. The humus formed by contact with ground animals and microorganisms is of great importance for the growth of the trees because it provides the necessary nutrients. In addition, the humus support helps to store organic carbon and stabilize the climate.
The filter and buffer function of the forest floors also ensures that clean drinking water is available. It is important to emphasize that these floors also store nutrients and pollutants. The preservation of the forest floors is therefore particularly important, especially since they are endangered by improper management. Michael Gerster and his team point out how essential the protection of these floors is. "The soil is our foundation and we have to respect it," says Gerster.
As part of the Info morning day on September 15, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Visitors can touch and feel the soil themselves in order to better understand the feeling of texture and the differences between the floors. This practical experience is supplemented by experts and experts who are willing to answer questions and give tips on choosing suitable tree species.
Gerster made it clear that, especially in view of climate change, it is crucial to consider the soil conditions in the planting measures. If you are unsure about the specific floor of your forest, you can get advice from the experts from the forestry office in advance. The effects of compacted soils that can lead to problems such as wing and flat roots are also discussed. The difference between the floors in Neuhausen and the forests around Königsbach-Stein is remarkable.
Holger Nickel invites private forest owners to take part in this informative morning and to expand their knowledge of forest floors. The meeting point for the tour to the excavator hole is the parking lot at the Waldklimapfad at the Schellbronn sports field. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required by email to the forestry office.
