Heavy rain and chaos: Erfurt and Nordhausen fight against flooding
The angry nature is again shown in the Free State of Thuringia when violent storms and heavy rain on August 2 are a challenge for the affected cities. Especially the capital of Erfurt and the city of Nordhausen are the focus of the events.
Chaos in Erfurt
On Friday morning, Erfurt was hit by massive rains. Roads turned into raging rivers within a very short time, and a number of cellars ran full of water. The traffic authorities are already warning of the consequences that the heavy rain has on the public transport network. The station underpass was again under water, which led to significant delays in tram traffic. At important intersections such as in the Weimarische Straße on the "Obi" hardware store was no longer.
Nordhausen in the alarm state
The city of Nordhausen is also affected. Again and again there were heavy rains at night, which resulted in numerous operations by the fire brigade. In various districts, including Bielener Straße, Herreder Straße and Flurstraße, it is important to make flooded roads passable again. Roads are blocked for this, and it is already clear that the levels of the rivers helmet and Zorge have risen sharply. The city has therefore taken precautions to fill sandbags because the registration level 3 at the helmets in Sundhausen was exceeded.
Safety precautions and warnings
In both cities, the fire brigade teams are highlighted. The Erfurt fire brigade appeals to drivers to keep the escape routes free while the city of Nordhausen has published acute warnings. The authorities urgently advise against crossing flooded roads because open shaft covers could hide under water. There is also danger to life if flooded basement are entered!
Why are these events important?
The violent rains that Thuringia affects not only have direct effects on the cities affected everywhere, but also also highlight the need for better urban infrastructures and emergency management systems. In view of climate change, municipalities will have to prepare for such extreme weather conditions better in order to ensure the security and mobility of the citizens.
The situation in Thuringia illustrates how important quick action and preventive measures are in the face of natural events. Citizens are asked to continue to follow the recommendations of the local authorities and to pursue the developments carefully.
