Caution! AI chatbots provide unreliable information about medication

An alarming study reveals that AI-based search engines and chatbots do not offer reliable information on medication. Researchers from the University of Erlangen found that the answers are often inaccurate and incomprehensible, which endangers patient safety. In the specialist journal "BMJ Quality & Safety", they call for caution and demand clear warnings. Trueram Andrikyan, the first author, realizes that the quality of the chat bot answers is not sufficient to replace the professional advice of a doctor.

In the investigation, which was carried out in April 2023, the team asked the Bing-Chatbot ten frequent questions about the 50 most prescribed medication in the USA. Although the overall chat bot cut off well, there were considerable weaknesses in certain questions. These inaccuracies are not recognizable for laypersons, which is a great risk. Despite the latest progress in AI technology, there is a considerable risk of the safety of patients. The safety and quality of other chatbots must also be rigorously checked, says Andrikyan.
