Bicycle road expanded to the Alte Heusteige: bicycle traffic in Oberesslingen is becoming more attractive

"Improvement of cycling in Esslingen"

The city of Esslingen continues to focus on promoting cycling to support sustainable and climate -friendly mobility. In a recent meeting of the mobility committee, important decisions were made to expand and improve the wheel infrastructure in Oberesslingen.

Expansion of the bicycle road

The expansion of the bicycle road from Hindenburgstrasse to the old hay is in full swing. This route along Hindenburgstrasse, Zimmerbach- and Weiherstraße as well as Landhausstraße is designed as a bicycle road. The first measures are currently being implemented to extend the bicycle road to the old hay. This expansion is intended to bundle cycling and improve traffic routing for cyclists. With a length of 3.1 kilometers, the bicycle road from west to east would be one of the longest in Germany.

Feedback and evaluation

After a two -year traffic attempt, the effects of the bicycle zone on Breslauer Straße were evaluated. An online survey among 277 citizens and interviews with experts showed that 90 percent of cyclists advocate the permanent establishment of the bicycle zone. 70 percent of non-cycling people also support this measure. The traffic counts showed that car traffic in the recent count has dropped by around 25 percent compared to 2019 while bicycle traffic has increased.

future regulations

In Breslauer Straße and its side streets, the special traffic rules of a bicycle zone continue to apply. Driving side by side by cycling is allowed and the vehicle traffic must reduce the speed in case of doubt. The city of Esslingen is now planning first measures to optimize the bicycle zone to make cycling in Oberesslingen even more attractive and safer.

outlook

The measures to strengthen cycling in Esslingen are part of a long -term commitment to environmentally friendly mobility. Mayor Hans-Georg Sigel emphasizes the importance of switching from the car to the bike in order to make the city climate-neutral by 2040. The improvement of the wheel infrastructure and the creation of safe bike paths are important steps in this direction.
