In order to meet the increasing need for swimming offers for children, the district sports association Euskirchen has taken significant steps. From September, mobile swimming containers in Hellenthal and Zülpich will be available to counteract the lack of swimming times in the region. These containers have been designed in response to the flood disaster and are particularly aimed at the municipalities concerned.

The swimming container in Hellenthal: a new place for learning

In Hellenthal, a swimming container will be set up at the secondary school on September 9, which can be used until December 23. The container, provided by the Josef-Wund Foundation, has a length of about twelve meters and a width of 2.40 meters and thus offers an environment that is similar to an apprenticeship pool. The delays in the delivery occurred, but the community is confident that it will soon be ready for use.

Katharina Mahlstedt from the municipality of Hellenthal emphasizes that the container is particularly intended for the water getting used to elementary school students. Inquiries from interested schools have already been received who want to use this new swimming frastructure. Martin Sommer from the KSB emphasizes that the quick reaction of the foundation to the needs of the communities is of great importance.

Zülpich: Part of a comprehensive state concept

At the same time, another swimming container is set up in the parking lot on Blayer Straße, which is available for a period of four weeks from the beginning of September. This container is part of the state concept "Narwali", which is intended to promote the use of such temporary facilities for swimming. This shows how necessary flexible solutions are to improve swimming times in the region.

Some challenges remain

Despite the progress, there are still a few challenges that come to those responsible. The KSB must again carry out demand surveys to the municipalities in order to clarify how much water time is really needed. This is further complicated by the bureaucracy and delays in the delivery of the containers.

It is important to emphasize that the swimming containers do not represent full-fledged replacement solutions for swimming pools, but they offer a protected space for the water getting used to children. Dr. Anja Wacker, project manager of the "Narwali" program, still sees the possibility that children who learn here can later make progress in regular swimming courses.

In addition, the district sports association has already successfully carried out swimming courses during the summer holidays, in which 34 children were taught swimming. This successful initiative shows the high need for swimming training and the need to expand access to water habituation and swimming lessons.

The swimming containers are available as a temporary solution, but the view is already aimed at more long-term projects, such as the construction of a new teaching swimming pool in Weilerswist, which is scheduled to open in 2025. It is to be hoped that the recent initiatives can lay the foundation for continuous improvement in the swimming offers in the entire region.
