A judge in Rochester dismissed the defense application to relocate the procedure because she feared an unfair process in the Chautauqua County. Matar, who was rushed in August 2022 during an event, was charged with attempted murder and serious assault. Although a deal with a 25-year prison sentence was offered to him, he refused. Rushdie survived the brutal attack, but lost his right eye and suffered serious injuries. The attack happened against the background of a call to the murder of Rusdhies, which was published in 1989 by the Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Chomeini in connection with Rusdhie's novel "The Satanian Verse".
