A fire in an agricultural building in Ohlenstedt triggered a comprehensive alarm of fire brigades in the Osterholz-Scharmbeck district. In the early afternoon, more precisely at 4:19 p.m., the firefighters from the towns of Freißenbüttel, Garlstedt, Hülseberg, Ohlenstedt and Osterholz-Scharmbeck were called to the Aßberg street. In addition, there were emergency services of the emergency services and the control system 2 of the district.

The firefighters who arrived as first aiders found an already burning barn in which large amounts of straw bales were stored. Fortunately, there were no more people in the building, and the animals could also be brought to safety in good time. This enabled the emergency services to focus exclusively on fire fighting.

challenges in fire fighting

The extinguishing work proved to be extremely challenging. The emergency services were able to prevent the flames from attacking the neighboring building, which was of the utmost importance in view of the situation. In order to ensure this protection, fire water had to be transported to the site via a longer route, which required a lot of strength and organization. The high temperatures of just under 30 degrees also represented a physical challenge for the 70 helpers. A preparatory ambulance was placed on site for security purposes, but was not used.

After the firefighters got the fire under control, some of the emergency services were able to take their way back around 7 p.m. However, the local fire brigades Ohlenstedt and Garlstedt remained on site to carry out the extinguishing work. These were lengthy and complex. An excavator was used to transport the straw bales into the outside piece by piece and pull them apart. Only after this measure was it possible to efficiently extinguish the flames, some of which had hidden inside the bales, with a large amount of extinguishing water and foam agents.

It was not until 2:33 a.m. that the emergency services had successfully completed all measures and were finally able to withdraw to their locations. A total of five local fire brigades with 12 vehicles and around 70 firefighters were present in this deployment, which illustrates the massive response to the unexpected fire.
