Hidden dangers in rapeseed oils: Öko-Test reveals defects
Frankfurt/Main (dpa/tmn) - rapeseed oil is a popular kitchen product that uses many households to roast and fry, mainly because of its taste neutrality. However, the examination of 30 different rapeseed oils by the magazine “Öko-Test” shows that in addition to valuable fatty acids, questionable substances can also be contained in the oils. An alarming discovery are residues of a pesticide that has been banned for decades.
contamination in organic rapeseed oil
A particularly sensational finding was to find residues of the pesticide in a cold-pressed organic rapeseed oil. DDT has been banned in Germany for 52 years because it is classified as likely carcinogenic. The rapeseed for this oil originally came from Romania, where DDT is also no longer allowed to be used. According to the manufacturer, this could be an old load that may have been created by contaminated floors. Even if the testers confirm that the DDT residues are currently not having an acute risk of health, these results raise questions about food safety.
diverse sources of pollutants
Three other products also showed Deltamethrin, another active ingredient that is considered potentially carcinogenic. The testers found residues from various pesticides in about half of the oils tested. These results call after more intensive controls and a closer look at the growing conditions in rapeseed cultivation.
Health risks through trans fats and mineral oils
Not just residues of pesticides are a problem. Two of the refined rapeseed oils exceed the permissible limit of trans fats, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The testers expressly pointed out that the products may be sold, but a reduction in this unhealthy fat is desirable.
In addition, around two thirds of the rapeseed oils examined are contaminated with mineral oil components, which also leads to point deductions in the evaluation. These contaminants can arise from contact with lubrication oils during harvesting and pressing.
test winner and positive news
In the middle of this critical findings, however, there is also good news: Five refined rapeseed oils, which were shown in the tests as the cheapest products, received the grade "very good". These brands, including "Bellasan pure vegetable oil from rapeseed" (Aldi) and "Frisan pure rapeseed oil" (Norma), can be purchased for 1.39 euros per liter. The fact that a good price-performance ratio is also available in oily food selection could encourage consumers to make more conscious decisions.conclusion: choose responsibly
The results of the “Öko-Test” examination are another sign that consumers should be particularly attentive to food. The uncovering of pollutants and contamination in frequently consumed products such as rapeseed oil illustrates the need for more transparency and stricter controls in the food industry. Consumers have the right to security and quality. Knowledge of the origin and the ingredients gives you the opportunity to make conscious purchase decisions and contribute to improving the standards.
