Friesland in change: Like a farm for modern holiday oasis
Friesland in change: Like a farm for modern holiday oasis
in Friesland, especially in the vicinity of Westerein-Harich, the Tuinier family has a special connection to agriculture and regional culture. The family visit goes back to the summer of 1968 when the cows were delivered by Bauer Terpstra and the farm was rented by him to urban holidaymakers. The family's father decided not to travel abroad, and so the family spent every summer in Friesland. The stay enabled them to also visit the local Protestant Church.
In 1969 the farm was modernized by installing a toilet, a shower and a boiler, while many of the original elements were preserved. The rural furnishings were rustic, with a petroleum cooker, a dining table and a coal furnace. The oldest sister and the narrator slept in the beds that were previously used by other residents.
more recent developments on the farm
Currently Josien and Jacky Tuinier live in the converted farm, which was acquired by them in 2020. The old barn was rebuilt to offer the children their own bedroom on the upper floor. The bathrooms are covered with natural stone and the kitchen has a cooking island and underfloor heating. The family has removed many of the original elements of the farm, which was previously rebuilt in the Mediterranean style.
Jacky, who was once a farmer, adapted to the agriculture of his family because the milking shop was no longer profitable. He is now milking for the new tenant with an inventory of 340 cows and stands up every morning at 3:15 a.m. After milking, he works at de Heus Voeders and advises farmers in the region.
For those who want to learn more about agricultural experience and contact with animals, there is the opportunity to help with milking and watch animals at birth. An example of such offers can be found in Workum, where the accommodation "Op de Hoek van de Stal" preserves the atmosphere of the rural region in a historical, 19th century. There visitors can enjoy nature and regional culture, whereby activities such as hiking, cycling and kitesurfing are offered.
These connections between the past and the present in agriculture are not only reflected in the way of life of the Tuinier family, but also in the general development of the region, such as boerderijkamers.nl reported. The design of the accommodation respects the historical features of the building and offers modern comfort for guests.
