Live from the castle park: Mathilde seeds soon broods!
In the Schlosspark Jever, district of Friesland, animal lovers can follow the brood of a seed pair live over a webcam this season. The first egg laying is expected between March 13th and 22nd, such as Tagesschau reported. The female, which bears the name "Mathilde", has regularly laid its first egg over the past seven years during this period. Sowing crows usually lay four to six eggs, and in recent years there were usually two to three young birds.
The members of the group "Live", which includes Jever, Nabu and other environmental groups, take care of the camera and the documentation. The project records up to 60,000 clicks annually, which illustrates the great interest in observing "Mathilde" and its partner. The recordings are not only available online, but also on a screen in the left gatehouse of the castle, as Castle Museum.de
technical details and nesting behavior
The webcam was prepared on the breeding season on February 11th and had to be reoriented on February 25th due to storm damage. The company Braukmann Baumpflege supported the realignment, while the company Stadtlander provided the digital infrastructure. On February 26, the already completed nest disappeared, probably cleared by other breeding couples. But “Mathilde” and her partner immediately started building a new nest that can now be followed on the camera.
The nest is in an ash at a height of 22 meters and is inhabited by the couple with a high degree of nesting loyalty. Saat crow pairs show that they stay together for a lifetime. During the breeding season, the male takes care of food. The young birds are expected to be fledged from mid -May.
