Housing in Fulda: City fights against acute lack of living space
Fulda, Deutschland - The search for affordable living space in the Fulda district is becoming increasingly a challenge. A current study by the Pestel Institute showed that around 1190 new apartments are needed annually to cover the existing deficiency. But the reality looks dark: in the first five months of this year only 191 new apartments were approved, in the previous year there were 238 in the same period. "The new building is necessary to reduce the existing deficit," said Matthias Günther, managing director of the institute. But the willingness to create new living space has decreased by 20 percent.
In addition, around 5740 apartments in the district are unused, which makes up 5.2 percent of the inventory. The city of Fulda emphasizes to actively work on new construction areas to defuse the situation. Examples are the new development areas in Waidesgrund and Haimbach-Ost. New residential projects are also planned in the municipality of Petersberg, as several hundred applicants have recently been interested in residential buildings. In the combined city of Hünfeld, the need for housing grows due to steady population growth and increasing construction costs. Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok announced that the city is planning to create new living opportunities to counter the challenges of the market. Further information can be found at www.fuldaerzeitung.de.
