No more Swiftkirchen? Gelsenkirchen in criticism of Taylor Swift concerts

Criticism of "Swiftkirchen" in Gelsenkirchen: What is behind it?

In a few days, Gelsenkirchen will be marked by Taylor Swift when the pop icon comes into the city for several concerts. But the planned renaming to "Swiftkirchen" ensures mixed feelings among the residents. The discussions about the marketing campaign increase and raise the question of whether the energy should not be invested better in the solution of other urban problems.

"Swiftkirchen" is already emblazoned on a town sign on Heinrich-König-Platz, surrounded by floral motifs and Taylor Swift in a pink look. The construction of "Taylor Town" with a wide range of entertainment offers around the singer shows the enthusiasm that spreads in the city. But not everyone share this enthusiasm.

The comments on social media reflect the divided opinion. While some see the campaign as an entertaining advertising for the city, others criticize the supposed wastewater scandal: "The effort is ridiculous", "waste of money for nonsense", "how can you distract yourself if the real problems are unnoticed?"

The city of Gelsenkirchen reacts to the heated debate in a typical rustic manner: "Boah, people who annoy! We have other priorities here, but we expect local patriotism and common sense". With the global media hype, the city marketing “gladly Gelsenkirchen” nevertheless thanks for the positive headlines. But now it is up to the residents to give Swifties from all over the world a warm welcome and to show the city from their best side. Because every night up to 70,000 fans should be expected in the stadium on Schalke.

The heated discussions will probably stop until the beginning of the concerts. Some votes from the city and are happy about the unconventional PR campaign, while others are still criticizing. An agreement seems to be a long way off.
