On Sunday, September 8th, a special event takes place in North Rhine-Westphalia: the day of the open monument. On this day, visitors have the opportunity to explore about a thousand impressive sights that are known for their history and cultural importance. Under the motto "Truth-Sign. Contemporary witnesses of history", the participants can expect numerous impressions and interesting tours.

This monument day, which takes place annually in September, attracts numerous people every time-in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, tens of thousands of visitors enjoy these unique insights into history. According to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which organizes this event in Bonn, over 200 cities throughout North Rhine -Westphalia will take part. The range of monuments ranges from magnificent castles to cozy farmhouses to important churches and historical industrial plants.

One of the outstanding sights is the bike racing track in Bielefeld, which was inaugurated in 1953, which is an important piece of sports history. The house of the first Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in Rhöndorf near Bonn, which is preserved, is also visited. These and many other places, such as a windmill in the Münsterland Ennigerloh and the old administrative court in Gelsenkirchen, which once served as the main post, are part of this special experience.

A very special highlight is the listed “Heike’s Kiosk” in Herne-Sodingen. The kiosk, which was built in 1922, has retained its charm and is still used today as a beverage hall and needs. The German Foundation for Monument Protection acquired the kiosk last year to maintain it for posterity.

The tours give the participants the opportunity to look behind the scenes of the monuments and to discover their historical advantages. In Wuppertal, for example, interesting perspectives on the district court and its architecturally remarkable rooms, such as the detention tract and the jury courtyard, can be obtained. It is advisable to register in advance, since the places are often limited.

In addition, there are special city tours in Lemgo, which are intended for children from the age of six. The little explorers should get an insight into the local city and building history, which also makes this event a family-friendly event. The curiosity and the fun of learning are encouraged.
