Höhlerfest in Gera: thousands of celebrations tradition and underground secrets!
In Gera, several thousand people celebrated this year's Höhlerfest, which began on Saturday with a large move from the Kornmarkt through the city center to the museum square. The small but fine move was accompanied by various clubs and sports groups. In the evening hours there was a spectacular fire show and concerts on the program. The city festival, which started on Thursday, attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year and also offers guests the opportunity to visit the historic Gera Höhler.
The Höhler are unique, artificially created basements that originally served to bear the beer and were created in a depth of five to twelve meters under the city in the 17th and 18th centuries. These vaults, where constant temperatures are twelve degrees, were connected by corridors in the late 1930s to use them as an air -raid shelter. After the Second World War, the underground rooms were largely forgotten, but were later rediscovered. For more information about this festival and the Höhlern, see the report on www.faz.net .
