After a lightning strike: Thuringian forest railway runs again according to schedule

On Wednesday afternoon, a lightning strike in a supervision of the Thuringian Waldbahn caused excitement and temporary disorders in traffic. These incidents are unusual, but often lead to dangerous situations. The lightning strike occurred between the Boxberg and Leina stops and caused the immediate collapse of the overhead line. At this point, a tram with around 30 passengers was on the track and was stopped abruptly.

The Thuringian Waldbahn has been an important transport connection in the Thuringian Forest for decades, especially between Gotha and Bad Tabarz. Their loss or restriction would also be important for the commuters and students in the region.

evacuation of passengers

After the overhead line fell, an evacuation of the passengers was initiated immediately. The majority of passengers consisted of pupils who had to be brought to safety quickly. These were led over around 300 meters, along the tracks, to the Leina stop, where they were received by their parents. A spokesman for the Waldbahn said that all evacuated could leave the accident area safely.

This was an unexpected and possibly scary experience for passengers, especially since lightning strikes can bring unknown dangers and provide chaos. Fortunately, the evacuation went smoothly, which indicates a well -functioning emergency reaction.

The route between Boxberg and Leina remained closed until late at night, around 10 p.m., while technicians were working on repairing the overhead line. A provisional repair effort was arranged over a distance of approx. 300 meters. Unfortunately, this incident also has financial consequences. The damage on the tram is estimated at between 5,000 and 7,000 euros, while the damage to the overhead line could be over 10,000 euros.

After work, the regular operation could be resumed. The Thuringian Forest Railway not only represents a means of transport. It is also part of the region's cultural heritage. In view of such incidents, it is important to continue to rely on security and technical maintenance to protect passengers and maintain the reliable connection.
