Chess championship in Gera: 157 participants fight for titles!
The 2nd Albrecht-Beer-Renkturnier is currently taking place in Gera, and the heads smoke on the chess boards. Together with the Gera youth Open U 14, in which a total of 157 participants from ten federal states will take part by Sunday, the Panndorfhalle becomes the central point of contact for chess enthusiasts. After the success of the premiere with 120 players in the previous year, the number of participants was expanded, which caused the organizers to build additional tables. Particularly gratifying: for the first time a grand master, Michael Richter, is at the start and has already won two victories.
In addition, the Thuringian championship titles in men and women are awarded as part of the tournament, with the best Thuringians qualify for the German Championships 2025. Several players are currently leading the tableau with two points. The youth Open U 14 also start on Saturday with 81 participants. The tournament honors Albrecht Beer's life's work, who has been working for chess in Gera since the 1950s and died in 2019. Since Wednesday, numerous volunteers have prepared the event, which once again shows how alive the chess community is in Gera, reports www.otz.de .
