Schwerin Volkshochschule starts integration course for immigrants

In the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schwerin, there is significant progress in integration work for newly immigrant people. At the adult education center (VHS), 21 adults started their first integration course about a month ago. This course is an important step towards successful integration and language skills.

Waiting for the next integration course

There is currently a high demand for integration courses in Schwerin. According to a spokeswoman for the city, several dozen people are waiting to be able to take part in such a course. This situation illustrates the increased need for language support and integration in the region during a time when many people from different countries, especially Ukraine, come to Germany.

structure of the integration course

The integration course at the VHS comprises a total of 600 lessons: 500 hours of German lessons and an additional 100 hours that deal with German history, culture and legal system. The aim of the participants is to achieve the B1 language level. This level is of central importance in order to be able to master everyday and work better in Germany. The importance of the language for integration cannot be assessed highly enough because it reduces barriers and opens up access to education and work.

preparation for future courses

The VHS Schwerin was certified in May 2024 as an official spa winner, which means that further courses can be offered in the future. The next integration course should start in October. This development shows the efforts of the city to actively promote the integration of immigrants and give them the opportunity to integrate into society.

a step in the right direction

The introduction of these courses is not only a success for the participants, but also for the entire community in Schwerin. Integration is a joint process that depends on the support of all social actors. The integration course at the VHS could serve as a model for other cities, in which an increase in immigration can also be observed. In today's globalized world, it is essential that new citizens learn the country's language in order to strengthen and actively help shape their role in society.

The joint learning, the exchange of cultures and personal development within the courses has the potential to create a feeling of belonging and reduce prejudices. It is to be hoped that many other people can benefit from this important education initiative.
