Alarming survey: High burnout rate among employees of the European Central Bank - every tenth with suicidal thoughts!

Health at work: The increase in burnout syndrome in banking

The current study carried out by PSY@Work on behalf of the European Central Bank (ECB) personnel committee brings out worrying figures: Almost 40% of the ECB employees suffer from burnout syndrome, while 9.1% even have suicide thoughts. These results clarify that the level of exhaustion in the organization has increased in recent years.

The survey, in which 1,602 employees of the ECB took part between April and May 2024, shows that 38.9% of the staff experience burnout syndrome, an increase of over five percentage points compared to the previous survey of 2021. Thoughts of suicide.

It becomes apparent that 72.8% of employees experience psychosomatic symptoms that are connected to work and impair their life to moderate or serious dimensions, such as headaches, insomnia or concentration problems.

The main causes for these alarming results were identified by the ECB personnel committee: preference and violation of equal opportunities, workload and working hours, management practices and dignity at work.

A spokesman for the ECB emphasized that measures were taken to react to the problems found and more are planned to address questions such as workload and professional development. The organization takes the health and well -being of your staff very seriously and offers support for mental and physical health.

It is important to emphasize that the employees are proud to work for the ECB, as can be seen from the survey of 2024, in which 85% of the information surveyed is proud of their work for the organization.
