Tobacco advertising exposes: How the industry seduces young people!

Immenhausen, Deutschland - The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a worrying campaign that deals with the manipulative tactics of the tobacco and nicotine industry. On the occasion of the World Niche smoking day 2025, the strategies with which young people are obtained are to be obtained for harmful products. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers and, among other things, requires a ban on flavors in tobacco products that make them particularly appealing for children and adolescents. According to the WHO, only four European countries have banned all flavors in e-cigarettes-a worrying signal, since 12.5 % of young people in Europe have already consumed e-cigarettes in Europe in 2022, while it was only 2 % in adults, as can be read in the WHO report ( Who ).

In a further step, leading doctors, under the leadership of the German Society for Pneumology and ventilation medicine (DGP), published a new position paper. It addresses the dangerous influence of the tobacco clobby on society and the health system. The DGP calls for minimizing these influences after the tobacco industry has tried to influence political and social decisions for decades. In view of the rapidly increasing consumption of e-cigarettes among young people, there are great concerns, since these new products can not only recover health risks, but also intensify social problems such as poverty, as was determined by the DGP ( dzw ).

The WHO warns that targeted marketing strategies that often operate in hidden endanger public health. One example is the attractive designs of tobacco products that are reminiscent of sweets in their design. This not only contributes to the start, but also to dependency. The DGP is aware of the challenges and appeals to politics to take urgent measures to protect the health system from the harmful influences of the tobacco industry.
