On Monday, a judgment could be made in the trial against a 24-year-old who was involved in the riots at the Eritrea Festival in Gießen. The indictment is on serious breach of the peace and dangerous bodily harm. This marks the beginning of the legal processing of the events that happened in Gießen a year ago.

The unrest on the edge of the Eritrea Festival in July 2023 led to a total of 26 injured police officers. The opponents of the event accused the participants of the festival a proximity to the dictatorial regime in Eritrea and escalated the situation through stone throws, bottle throws and breaking through barriers. These events led to around 650 investigations, so far about 50 charges have been charged. The trial against the 24-year-old accused is the first in this matter.

The 24-year-old defendant must answer before the Gießen district court. After video recordings were spotted and testimonials heard, the judge suspended the arrest warrant against a deposit.
