Public security in Gießen: Police conducts extensive controls

Gießen, a city in the heart of Hesse, is again in the focus of intensive police controls. In the past few days, the police forces have carried out several searches in the city center to counter drug crime.

With the support of the Hessian Presidium and the riot police from Lich, numerous people were thoroughly checked on Monday, August 26th. In the area of the Lahnufer in particular, suspicious behavior was observed when a group of people, including a 47-year-old Jamaican citizen, acted in a bush. The police reacted quickly and was able to secure irritant gas and around 113 grams of marijuana and hashish during a body control.

The efficiency of the police operations is also shown on the following day, August 27, when another control campaign took place. 42 people were examined as part of the "Safe watering" program, with several violations of the Narcotics Act. Among those arrested was a person who is suspected of acting drugs. The police received special support from a drug detection dog that tracked down hidden drugs on the Lahnufer. A jumping knife and a small amount of amphetamine could also be ensured.

The officials also concluded an investigation into unexplained stays and imposed fines for violations of the compulsory insurance law and for a suspected drug trip. The police have already announced that further controls will follow to increase the feeling of security in the city.

In parallel to these control measures, a serious accident occurred in Watzenborn-Steinberg on Tuesday, August 27. A 59-year-old cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with an Audi. The accident happened around 4:35 p.m. on the bike path of Gießener Strasse. The cyclist fell and was immediately taken to a hospital by the emergency services. The 26-year-old driver was unharmed, but there was considerable damage to the property on both vehicles, which is estimated at several hundred euros.

The police asks possible witnesses of the accident to report information at the Gießen Süd police station. Such traffic accidents underline the need for more security measures for cyclists and drivers in this lively city.

Police work in Gießen not only shows the challenges with which the authorities are confronted, but also the commitment to ensure public security. Whether through regular controls or the examination of traffic accidents - the police remain vigilant to make Gießen a safer place.
