Rhein-Main-Link: Gießener Stadtwald in danger from the earth cable project

In the district of Gießen there is an important forest area on the brink. Because of the planned high voltage guidelines "Rhein-Main-Link", there are massive clearing in the Spanewald, a popular recreation area in the city. The Amprion company has announced that they transport wind power from the North Sea to South Hesse over the next ten years, and the preferred route runs directly through this valuable forest.

Many Gießeners know the beauty of the Spanewald, its meandering paths and the unique flora and fauna. But few know that the forest belongs to the majority of the city of Gießen. The plan to build the cable stipulates that 9.2 hectares of forest area have to be cleared for the route. This corresponds to a width of up to 100 meters per 920 meters in length, which would lead to a "serious frame" of the forest, as the city administration emphasizes.

consequences of the clearing for the Spanewald

The plans not only provide for the one -time clearing, but also the permanent free maintenance of the route. This will not only affect the forest once, but the huge aisles could also have long -term negative effects on the ecosystem. The city council of Gießen, represented by spokeswoman Claudia Boje, expresses concern about the effects on the forest interior climate and the water balance. These changes could endanger the remaining forest stocks.

The selection of the affected areas is particularly tragic. These are some of the most ecologically valuable old hardwood stocks in the region that are over 130 years old. These natural forests are not only a habitat for many endangered species, they also contribute significantly to climate protection. Their destruction would therefore not only threaten the habitat of these species, but also significantly reduce the contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

The city of Gießen reacted to the concerns of the public and made its rejection clear to the current planning. It calls on Amprion to offer a transparent and detailed representation of the route choice and to check possible alternatives. A dialogue between Amprion and the residents is considered necessary, in particular in view of the heavily affected municipalities in the area that are already merging to tackle the clearing together.

Support for the Rhein-Main-Link

The city has already prepared a detailed statement, which is to be presented at an application conference this Thursday. In this statement, the city of Gießen will present its concerns and proposals for the route and emphasize the need for a dialogue with Amprion. A constructive alternative proposal could therefore be worked out by the neighboring neighboring municipalities, a process that the city of Gießen does not want to rule out.

The outcome of this project will be of crucial importance for both the residents and for the future of the Spanewald. In the coming weeks and months, it remains to be seen how the debate will develop and whether there is a way to meet both the requirements of the energy supply and the protection of the valuable natural resources.
