Real schools on the advance: Fewer fifth graders choose high schools in Göppingen

New educational landscape in Göppingen: Trend to the Realschule?

The school choice in Göppingen seems to develop into a new trend, with an increasing popularity of secondary schools compared to high schools. According to the latest number of registrations for fifth graders in the Göppingen district, published by the regional council, a significant decline in the number of schoolchildren for high schools indicates. While the high schools have been the preferred election so far, the numbers for the coming school year show a change. In the district town of Göppingen, with its four general education high schools, there is a decline of 18 percent in the registrations. Instead of 414 fifth graders there will only be 339. In the rest of the district, too, there is a minus of seven percent in high school registrations.

In contrast, the secondary schools in Göppingen recorded an increase of 18 percent, which increased the number of registrations to 280. Incidentally, the number remained constant at around 460. This development raises the question of whether the previous unbroken rush to high schools has come to an end and whether the parents and students are increasingly considering the secondary schools as an educational alternative.
