Landtag election Saxony 2024: Live updates, surveys and results from Dresden

On September 1, 2024, a decisive state election took place in Saxony, in which around 3.3 million citizens were allowed to participate. The choice was shaped by intensive public discussions and an exciting head-to-head race between the CDU and the AfD. The situation is associated with great uncertainty because the surveys show that the established parties, including the SPD, the Greens and the left, had to fight for their re -entry.

In the city of Hoyerswerda, the turnout was already 42.7 percent at 2 p.m., which shows a positive trend. The election manager Beate Gröger confirmed that the choice was calm and without special occurrences. This suggests that the citizens in the region actively use their right to vote and feel involved in political will formation.

First election results and candidates

The voters were not only interested in political content, but also in the personal stories of the candidates. Kathleen Liebschner, candidate of the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance for constituency 54, expressed that in the last few weeks of the election campaign she wanted to bring the contents of the election program above all. Personal contact during certain election forums was particularly moving.

The top candidate of the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht, Sabine Zimmermann, expressed her hope that her party had the opportunity to influence politics in Saxony. When she was levy, she expressly excluded a coalition with the AfD, which reflects the clear attitude of many parties compared to this right -wing extremist group. The SPD top candidate Petra Köpping was also concerned about the outcome of the choice because she had a "queasy feeling" and hoped for a stable coalition.

Michael Kretschmer, the Prime Minister of Saxony and top candidate of the CDU, expressed optimistically about possible election results. He believes that the Saxon Union could keep the government in his hand. The surveys showed that in the last phase of the election campaign time, the CDU was 33 percent and the AfD with 30 percent at the top.

What the turnout in the different cities looks like are very different numbers. In cities such as Dresden and Leipzig, the turnout at 12 p.m. at 57.5 percent and 52.5 percent was even higher than in the past elections in 2019. This could indicate a growing commitment of the voters or increase the concerns about the influence of the AfD.

In addition, not only the state parliament was chosen in Weißwasser, but also a new mayor. This shows how diverse and significantly the election day for the citizens of Saxony, since they can decide on several course for the future.

The intensity of the discussions in the election campaign also reflected the emotions and fears of the voters. Some young voters were afraid of a possible strengthening of the AfD and underlined the importance of their voice. They formulated urgent appeals to deal with the political content and not to choose from frustration or fear.

The day before the election, demonstrations with thousands of participants took place in Dresden who took place for solidarity, diversity and democracy. This event, called "Tolerade", presented a visible sign against extremism and for an open society. Such mobilizations indicate that many citizens in Saxony actively stand up for their values and do not want to be discouraged by the political mood.
