The Saxon police and the Ministry of the Interior rate the use of the cameras extremely successful. The inpatient video surveillance of public places has proven to be an effective means of deterring offenders. According to Anne Wieland, spokeswoman for the Görlitz police department, almost 800 crimes have so far been informed by the cameras or contributed to their clarification. Particularly frequent search successes were achieved in severe thefts of bicycles, cars and company property.
A "particularly severe theft" according to the Criminal Code is available if the perpetrator uses the helplessness of others or a danger - the victim does not have to be directly affected.
In addition to theft, the cameras were also able to help clarify theft of motorcycles, tools, boats and car nackers. Furthermore, drug smugglers, robbers, stealers and traffic offenders could be identified. Forbidden car races were recorded so that the police were able to determine the drivers.
The use of surveillance technology has therefore proven to be a decisive contribution to combating criminal offenses in Görlitz and Zittau. Despite the discussion about data protection and privacy, the cameras play an important role in the security of the citizens.
