Polish taxi ride with an unexpected end: Human smuggling on the border

In the tranquil Görlitz, an unusual scene occurred on Wednesday morning when the authorities stopped a Polish taxi and arrested three passengers. A 69-year-old Ukrainian who earns his money as a taxi driver was stopped by the federal police together with a 30-year-old Eritreaner and an Ethiopian couple, both 26 years old.

The journey, which initially started inconspicuously, quickly developed into a case of human smuggling. The Eritrean knew the young Ethiopian and traveled to Zgorzelec especially to meet him. Together they chose the taxi of the Ukrainian to pass the border unhindered.

The police intervened when the missing entry documents of the two 26-year-olds were discovered. The Eritrean was able to identify himself, but all three were arrested. The taxi driver and the Eritreaner are now expecting an advertisement on suspicion of human smuggling.

The general judgment that people from Africa specifically use illegal entry routes is not an isolated case and shows the desperate situation in which there are many migrants. The history of the people behind the arrests often remains in the dark, behind in any case there is an individual story that underlines the need for fair and decent migration policy.
