Crisis at the University of Göttingen: President Tolan voted out - what's coming now?
The University of Göttingen is facing uncertain times after President Metin Tolan's vial. The dismissive step of the Senate must now be confirmed by the board of trustees, headed by Prof. Peter Strohschneider. Before the important vote, the chairman of the foundation showed that there could be no green light for a deselection. According to the Lower Saxony University Act, the Senate must convene a joint meeting with the board of trustees. If there is no agreement, the Senate with a three -quarter majority could vote again for Tolan's dismissal. At the last Senate meeting, eleven out of thirteen members voted to vote Tolan, which increases the likelihood of confirmation.
The mood within the university remains tense, especially after the six and a half hour Senate meeting, which did not bring the hoped -for clarity. While some considered the concerns against Tolan as insufficient for a deselection, it turned out that the majority of the Senate members held on to the election and was rejected. Insiders suspect that the Senate had already agreed on the decision in advance. According to Professor Thomas Kaufmann, the university is still in a constitutional crisis and a state commissioner could be deployed to stabilize the university in the phase of the presidential search.
