Sömmerda chooses: AfD gets direct mandates for the Thuringian state parliament

district. After the state elections in the district of Sömmerda, the results have been determined and the AfD was able to significantly strengthen its position. In constituencies 16 and 17, the AfD candidates, Daniel Haseloff and Torsten Czuppon, won the direct mandates for the Thuringian state parliament. With a turnout of 73.8 percent, it turns out that many citizens have used their democratic law.

The counting of the votes is now complete. Torsten Czuppon, who ran in constituency 17, achieved remarkable 42.2 percent of the vote and can proudly look at his result. Klaus Wagner from the CDU landed just 5.7 percentage points behind him. This election was not only a success for the AfD, but was also a moment of disappointment for the Christian Democrats, which cut much better in the previous elections.

Details of the election results

In constituency 16, Daniel Haseloff from the AfD achieved 38.6 percent of the first votes, followed by Claudia Heber (CDU) with 32.9 percent. The second votes also reflect the strength of the AfD: with 34.2 percent, the party lies ahead of the CDU, which was only able to reach 24.0 percent. These results reflect growing support for the right -wing populist party, which has been repeatedly controversial in the past.

The results in the area such as Kindelbrück, where the AfD even received 51.4 percent of the second votes, are particularly striking. Such values underline the trend that voters are increasingly opting for alternatives to traditional parties. While the SPD, the left and the free voters lag far behind with their results, the Greens and the animal welfare parties show an even less relevance.

Torsten Czuppon, who showed up “speechless” during the election evening, even reached the most first votes in his hometown of Sömmerda with 38.2 percent. In some smaller electoral districts, he clearly fled his competitors - a clear signal to the political competition that the AfD cannot simply be written off here.

The turnout itself was represented differently in some areas. The city of Sömmerda reported 67.8 percent participation, while in Kindelbrück the turnout was 56.5 percent. Such fluctuations can be attributed to local conditions and mobilization by the parties.

The counting was largely calm throughout the region. It is particularly noteworthy that there was also a higher application for letter elections this year - a sign that many voters have become more flexible in their voting. Overall, the elections in the Sömmerda district seem to indicate a change in the political landscape, which could also be important beyond these elections.

For the AfD, this election victory is not only a success at the local level, but could also have an impact on the future political debate in Thuringia. The challenges for the CDU rise while the AfD wants to consolidate its position. In view of these developments, the Thuringian state parliament could be shaped by intensive discussions in the coming years. The dynamics of the elections in Sömmerda gives an insight into the mood of the electorate, which in a time of change and uncertainty is not afraid to explore new political ways.
