Cycling for climate protection: Nordhorn's city bike starts!
The city of Nordhorn relies on sustainable mobility and is once again organizing the “City Cycling” campaign this year. The event starts on August 22nd and runs over a period of three weeks. Mayor Thomas Berling sees the event an important opportunity to highlight the advantages of cycling for the individual and the community.
a real community event
The competition for most of the rattled kilometers is not only a sporting challenge, but also a joint project. For the 11th time, Nordhorn takes part in the climate protection campaign, which is supposed to stimulate the promotion of alternative means of transportation. "Every bicycle kilometer is, whether you go to work, school or just go shopping," emphasizes Mayor Berling. Last year Nordhorn stood out with almost 450,000 rattled kilometers and took tenth place in the Germany -wide competition for cities with 50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants.
price raffles and recognition
Another incentive to participate is the attractive prices of material prices provided for the participants. Among the sponsors are known names such as the Kreissparkasse Grafschaft Bentheim and the AOK, which generously contribute prices worth 500 to 800 euros. In addition, the most hardworking participant from primary and high schools is awarded. This competition not only promotes cycling, but also strengthens the sense of community among young people.

In the course of the three weeks, numerous other excursions, organized by various partners who cover various topics - from fair trade to nature conservation.
data for urban development
An important goal of the campaign is to collect data on the transport infrastructure. By using an app that records the ripped kilometers, the anonymized data can be used to analyze the local traffic situation. This data is used as part of a research project to plan targeted improvements and promote cycling.
