Shaping pupils memory: project to upgrade the war graves

New project for memory culture at the War Gräberstelle Oberlangen

In the future, pupils of the Mariengymnasium in Papenburg will actively participate in the design of memory boards that are reminiscent of the victims of the "Emsland camp" (1933 to 1945) as part of an important educational project. This is done in close cooperation with the Esterwegen memorial and the Volksbund Deutsche Wargräberfürsorge.

meaning of the project for the community

The project is of far -reaching importance for the school and the local community: it not only promotes historical awareness among the students, but also contributes to strengthening the culture of remembrance in the region. At a time when the contemporary witnesses of the Nazi era are less, such initiatives are crucial to keep history alive and to preserve the victim's memory. The older ones among us may remember the atrocities that took place in the Emsland camps, and the youth are familiarized with these topics in a constructive way.

collaboration and support

On August 13, 2024, the project was officially launched, and the 12th level students will deal with the topics of the BOOK VI Oberlangen and the associated war graves under the guidance of teacher Sebastian Jendt. You can get support from Kristina Seibel, the educational officer of the Volksbund Weser-Ems, and the memorial teacher Jacqueline Meurisch from the Esterwegen memorial. These experienced specialists bring in important knowledge and carry out educational offers with the students at extra -curricular learning locations that contribute to an in -depth understanding of the topic.

public presentation of the memory boards

A public event will mark the end of the project. In June 2025, the memory boards are inaugurated and the exact date will be announced early. This ceremony will be an important moment for the students, the municipality of Oberlangen and the Samtgemeinde Lathen to reflect and learn together.

a sign against forgetting

The initiative supported by the community and the partners mentioned is a strong sign against forgetting and shows the responsibility of today's generations to deal with the past. The students not only work on the production of the tables, but also deal with relevant questions about human fates that go beyond the pure history of history.

Overall, the project is more than just a school task. It is a common commitment to a responsible future based on the teachings from history. This type of memory culture is essential to ensure that such atrocities are not forgotten and the coming generations are obliged to be vigilant.
