The county of Bentheim can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being: the outbreak of bird flu seems to be under control. After around 91,000 animals were killed in a laying hen company in Bad Bentheim, no further cases were reported.
No further infections
The laboratory report confirmed that it was the highly contagious variant. About a third of the poultry farms in the restricted zone have been tested, but without indications of further infections. Controls in private animal husbandry are also planned in the coming week, since not all owners follow the stable obligation.

A protected area with a radius of three kilometers was set up around the affected company, as well as a surveillance zone with a radius of ten kilometers. However, there are concerns from the district, since not all requirements are taken seriously. Several information from citizens have shown that some disregard the regulations. This is seen as irresponsible in the fight against a highly contagious animal disease.
It remains to be hoped that the measures taken will be sufficient to prevent the further spread of bird flu and to ensure the safety of the animal stocks in the region.
