AfD Triumphs in Regional Elections with Record Breaking Results
New district president confirmed - AfD as an election winner without candidates
On June 9, the AfD won the district election in Vorpommern-Greifswald with an impressive result of 29.8 percent. This marked their best result in a district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The party now provides the largest parliamentary group in the district council with a total of 19 members, although the district council consists of 71 members.
In a similar Situation, there was also a constituent meeting in the district council of the Mecklenburg Lake District, which also came together on Monday. Only the incumbent Thomas Diener (CDU) competed in the election as district president. The AfD, which also emerged in the Lake District of 29.6 percent of the votes as the strongest force, had not set up its own candidate. In this case, the district council consists of 77 members.
An interesting situation arises here, since the AfD emerged as the election winner in both counties, but had no alternative candidates when filling the district presidential post. This raises questions about the strategy and the self -image of the party, since she apparently has no candidate for such an important position.
It remains to be seen how the position of the AfD will develop in the upcoming meetings of the district council and whether the party is able to further expand its political presence and assertiveness in the course of the legislative period. The election of the district president may only be a first step, but it already shows an interesting insight into the internal party structures and decision -making processes of the AfD in the respective counties.
