Alarm mood on Rügen's coast: 25 cone seals found dead!
On the east coast of Rügen and in the Greifswald Bodden, the alarming finds are piled up. At least 25 dead animals have been discovered since the beginning of October, and initial investigations show that many of the seals could have drowned. It is particularly worrying that water in the lungs has been detected in three animals - possibly due to an entanglement in nets. The Sea Museum has filed a complaint against unknown people to clarify the background, since a fresh constriction was also found for a seal.
like Dr. Judith Denkinger from the Sea Museum reports, this year's number of dead cone seals is alarming. Within just two weeks, 25 dead animals have already been counted, which exceeded the previous record of 2017 when 23 seals died within two months. Many of the dead animals were spotted along the coast between Binz and Lobbe. Until a few years ago, the cone seal was almost extinct in the German Baltic Sea, but has recovered thanks to strict protective measures. The ongoing studies on the causes of death could last until the end of November, while the marine authorities are still on alert. More on this in a report by www.tagesschau.de .
