Greifswald: New OP robot revolutionizes medical care

At the University Medical Center in Greifswald, a significant further development in operational medicine is imminent. On Thursday, June 29, 2024, Science Minister Bettina Martin presented a funding notice of over 3.3 million euros as part of a visit to the Hanseatic city. These financial means are intended for the purchase of a new surgical robot that has the potential to raise medical interventions in the region to a new level.

With the introduction of the Da Vinci SP OP robot, Greifswald will position itself as a pioneering city in Germany and Europe. This state-of-the-art robot allows operations through an extremely compact single port of just 2.5 centimeters in diameter, on which four instruments can be attached. This means that the operating field is approximate size of a tennis ball, which enables more precise and gentler surgical technology.

previous developments in Greifswald

The University Medical Center Greifswald is not new in the world of robot -based operations. As early as 2023, a robot of the type da Vinci XI was put into operation. The first results of this technology were consistently positive and contributed to the fact that the step to the new, more progressive model is now being dared

"We strive for medical care at the highest level - that is the claim of our patients," said Minister Martin. It emphasizes that the introduction of the Da Vinci SP Robots Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania not only increases scientifically, but also clinically into the rank of the leading German university clinics. This not only underlines technological innovation, but also the commitment of university medicine to offer first -class medical services.

Integration and synergies in the operational area

The minister had the opportunity to personally examine the use of robots in the areas of orthopedics and trauma surgery. These clinics were recently closer, which improved the operational workflow. The synergies from the cooperation between the two disciplines are a central part of the strategic orientation of the University Medical Center in Greifswald. The aim is to optimize both health care and training of prospective specialists.

In addition, the new robot is integrated as part of the focus of the "Robotics of the Future" in the University Medical Center in Greifswald. This focus is devoted to the safe implementation of the robot system as well as the economic and clinical questions that arise from its use. This shows the endeavor to not only be technological, but also in practical use.

Developments at the University Medical Center in Greifswald are an exciting example of how modern technology finds its way into medical care. The continuous investment in innovative solutions not only promises progress in patient treatment, but also a significant contribution to the further development of surgery in the region.
