Usedom: Why the sun island remains in the case of solar expansion
Usedom: Why the sun island remains in the case of solar expansion
The island of Usedom, known as one of the sunniest regions in Germany, learns unexpected setbacks when it comes to solar energy. While the first quarter of 2024 only nine new photovoltaic systems recorded, Usedom rely on a total of 98 installations installed. In contrast, the business with solar energy in the surrounding cities such as Greifswald and Stralsund is booming, where the installation numbers are significantly higher.
increase in the area, step backwards to Usedom
In Greifswald, for example, 46 new solar systems were installed in the same period, which corresponds to an increase of 7.8 percent. Stralsund was able to add 32 new facilities, while Rügen, also nearby, had 19 new facilities. In comparison, Usedom seems to be far from this development. This could be due to several factors, including the attractive thatched roofs that bring about aesthetic and technical challenges when installing solar modules.
Challenges of solar installation
The thatched roofs on Usedom, which are a real highlight for tourists, are a challenge for the fitters of solar systems. Vattenfall's energy expert explains that the installation is possible on a thatched roof, but it has many disadvantages. The roof requires sufficient air, light and heat that could be restricted by attaching solar modules.
Nature Conservation and Aesthetic Considerations
Another important factor is nature conservation. Many areas on Usedom are under protection, which makes it difficult for the construction of large solar parks. This problem is particularly relevant when you consider that in other parts of Western Pomerania's systems more often, without these restrictions.
Review of the photovoltaic development in MV
Despite the low growth on Usedom, the trend in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows a stability as a whole. The proportion of photovoltaics in electricity generation from renewable energies has been relatively constant since 2011. With over 28,000 plants in 2022, MV corresponds to the nationwide trend, which shows an increase in the number of photovoltaic systems by 16 percent.
The Energy Market and the special features of Usedom
Despite the challenges on Usedom, the demand for solar systems in other regions has increased after the Ukraine War and the increasing energy prices. Experts predict that 2024 could be a step backwards for Usedom, since the installations are usually carried out in the first quarter in order to be able to use them in the same year. Although the island offers perfect conditions due to its high number of hours of sunshine, citizens and companies remain reserved when it comes to installing solar systems.
FAZIT: An unused potential
The unused potential of solar energy on Usedom is unfortunate if you take into account the favorable conditions. While surrounding cities are flourishing, Usedom remains far behind the possible progress. The question arises how the island can secure its position as a sun island in the long term, while at the same time the challenges in the field of nature conservation and cultural identity, such as the thatched roof, must be taken into account.
