Hamburger SV starts the 2nd league with victory against 1. FC Köln
On the first match day of the 2nd Bundesliga, two traditional clubs met: Hamburger SV and 1. FC Köln. The match was held in the sold-out stadium of FC Köln and ended with a 2-1 win for the Hamburgers.
A promising start of the season for HSV
In front of 50,000 enthusiastic fans, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer was the star of the game by scoring both goals for HSV in the 6th and 35th minute. His first goal resulted from a mistake by the Cologne goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who could not hold a harmless shot.
Cologne memories of past successes
Cologne, led by trainer Gerhard Struber, also resolved, but had difficulty exploiting the opportunities. At least Linton Maina managed to score the connecting goal in the 78th minute. Despite the defeat, he was optimistic and said: "Even if we lost, we played a good game. We deserved more."
The importance of the first division start
This game was particularly important for Steffen Baumgart, the former Cologne coach, who now heads Hamburger SV. Baumgart pointed out that the promotion to the Bundesliga is the declared goal of the HSV, and after this opening victory the team looks optimistic into the future.
Bundesliga flair and fan-sized environment
The backdrop in the Cologne stadium was impressive and reminded of the upper class. Thomas Kessler, head of license of FC Köln, noted that the stadium would have been sold out on 100,000 tickets available. This shows how much the fans expect and support football to return to the second division.
The game course
The game started dynamically. Cologne initially had the better chances, but could not use them. After the Hamburgers took the lead through Königsdörffer, the game stabilized. The HSV was clearer on the offensive, while Cologne waited in vain for the chances.
In an exciting first matchday of the 2nd division, it became clear that both teams have potential for further development. This is a promising start for Hamburg, while Cologne has the opportunity to learn from this defeat and return more.
