New Elbbrücke in Hamburg: Urgent renovation starts today!

Neue Elbbrücke, 20457 Hamburg, Deutschland - On May 2, 2025, the renovation work on the new Elbbrücke started in Hamburg. These necessary maintenance measures that are intended for half a year affect car traffic towards the city center. The new Elbbrücke is an important gateway to the city center of Hamburg, especially for road users from Harburg, Wilhelmsburg and from the motorways 1 and 255.

The last comprehensive renovation of the building, which has not been maintained for more than 15 years, took place in 2010/2011. According to the reports, the dilapidated bridge over the norder is heavily contaminated and is used daily by around 100,000 vehicles. The planned measures include the repair of six transitional constructions on the bridging, concrete repair work as well as welding and corrosion protection work. Traffic senator Anjes Tjarks described the renovation as "urgently due".

Details on the renovation work

The renovation takes place between Veddel and Rotenburgsort and is scheduled to last until the end of October 2025. In order to carry out the work, the lanes are swung, with at least three lanes should remain open throughout. Nevertheless, the exit to HafenCity is expected to be closed until November 3, 2025. From August 24, 2025, a relocation of the construction site to the bus lanes in the middle of the bridge is planned. A lane is also removed out of town, which should also apply until the end of October 2025.

During the entire construction period, the Bübenbückenbückenstraße and the Billhorner Röhrendamm stop for bus lines No. 154 and 640 are eliminated. These maintenance are coordinated with further measures on the surrounding motorways to ensure traffic safety and performance.
