New shine for a Hamburg attraction
The new Jungfernstieg, although less prominent than its famous namesake, is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque streets in the Hanseatic city. With the Hotel four seasons as a landmark and a breathtaking view over the Inner Alster, this street attracts visitors from all over the world. But despite its ideal situation, the new Jungfernstieg is getting a bit old. In order to preserve the attractiveness of the quarter, you are now planning a comprehensive beautification of the street lined with Linden.
conversion work by summer 2025
On Monday, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the modernization of the new Jungfernstieg took place in front of the hotel. Traffic senator Anjes Tjarks, Hamburg senior building director Franz-Josef Höing, Sebastian Binger from Otto Wulff Bid GmbH and Jan-Peer Lehfeldt, hotel manager of the four seasons were present. By summer 2025, the entire area between Esplanade and Jungfernstieg should be fundamentally rebuilt and upgraded.
Improvements for pedestrians and cyclists
A central goal of redesign is the increase in quality of stay for pedestrians and cyclists. By reducing the road width, the new Jungfernstieg is converted into a one -way street towards Jungfernstieg. The vehicle traffic is limited to one track, with cyclists and drivers using the lane together. 52 parking spaces for cars along the Alster side are eliminated, while there will continue to be parking spaces for delivery traffic and people limited. In addition, new seating, renewed lighting, rows of trees and a wide promenade along the banks of the Alster are planned.
Part of the Velorouute Network
The new Jungfernstieg becomes an integral part of the bike route, which is expanded as a main road network for cyclists in Hamburg. The construction work is also financed by federal funds and investments by landowners. Overall, the costs for the redesign amount to 5.6 million euros.
A new chapter for the city center of Hamburg
The redesign of the new Jungfernstieg should not only improve the quality of life of residents and visitors, but also further upgrade the entire city center of Hamburg. With a modern and attractive appearance, this magnificent boulevard becomes an attraction for tourists and locals alike. Thanks to the commitment of authorities, companies and landowners, the new Jungfernstieg will soon shine in new splendor.
