Renaturation on the Oberweser: Nature conservation meets leisure fun!

The BUND Lower Saxony has launched the “Blue Band Oberweser” project to sustainably examine and revitalize the Weser. A central goal of this project is the renaturation of the floodplain landscapes on the Oberweser, which should have positive effects on nature, agriculture and leisure activities. Between Hann. Münden and Minden were identified 28 areas that come into question for nature conservation measures, such as dewezet.de reported.

Various topics were discussed on a shipping, including flood protection and renaturation. In a preliminary study report, the federal government examined 21,678 hectares of the area, of which 3,783 hectares (approx. 17%) are suitable for renaturation measures. Four areas in particular, including Rumbeck in Hessisch Oldendorf, have great potential for the return of natural flood rooms and the creation of habitats for rare animals and plants. The preliminary study should serve as the basis for further programs and planning so that the results can flow into future projects.

goals and cooperation

The project also has a long -term perspective: In the next few years, the BUND Lower Saxony is planning to create a total concept of implementation, which is intended to serve as the basis for the main project in the period from 2025 to 2035. Nature conservation measures are to be implemented in the identified focus rooms in order to restore valuable habitats and their ecosystem services on the Oberweser. This was supported by a comprehensive preliminary examination, the around 200 river kilometers between Hann. Münden und Minden includes, as bund-niedersachsen.de noted.
