HAMM (dpa/tmn) - Do you get frequent punchers or the unpleasant feeling of heartburn? You are not alone with that. These symptoms increase and the causes are more complex than you think. A central factor lies in the muscles of our body, which becomes weaker with age.
Ulrich Tappe, the chairman of the professional association of resident gastroenterologists in Germany, emphasizes the differences in muscle tone between younger and older people. He explains that the muscles of the esophagus and the diaphragm in young people are more powerful and structured. This is also the reason why young people are able to swallow a juicy chop, while older people do better to chew their meals thoroughly to make digestion easier.

This age -related muscle weakness often leads to a certain leak that can cause heartburn. Tappe describes this as a natural process of aging that you have to accept. For active people who run strength training and are already fighting with reflux problems, there are important information. Tappe warns that certain exercises in the gym can be counterproductive. In particular, weightlifting and intensive abdominal presses can cause the food porridge to be pressed out of the stomach into the esophagus. This significantly increases the feeling of heartburn. It is therefore advisable to check fitness routines and possibly adapt to avoid health complaints.
