Investigations after a thwarted terrorist attack on Israel's consulate in Munich

In Munich, the investigation into a thwarted alleged terrorist attack on the Israeli Consulate General has taken on speed. Video recordings of drivers, passers -by and residents play a central role. The Munich police have called for the videos to be provided via an upload portal to help investigators investigate the incident.

The incident occurred after a change of shooting in which an 18-year-old Austrian was killed from the Salzburg region. He had previously come into the focus of the authorities on suspicion of religious radicalization. According to the Salzburg police, a weapon ban had already been imposed on him, which could not be lifted before 2028.

Earlier investigations and references to radicalization

As a 17-year-old, the man had noticed because of his threats against classmates and a assault. In this context, the suspicion suggested that he might have joined a terrorist association. Investigations in April 2023, however, were discontinued by the Salzburg public prosecutor, although propaganda of the terrorist organization of Islamic State was found on his mobile phone. Since then, the young man had not shown any police noticeability.

After the fatal incident in Munich, a search of his home in Neumarkt on Lake Wallers was carried out. Numerous civil servants were used to secure evidence and possible traces. The residential building and adjacent buildings were evacuated for security, but it turned out that there was no acute danger.

Investigations continue in Bavaria

On the German side, the Bavarian Central Office has taken over the investigation to combat extremism and terrorism. It is assumed that a planned terrorist attack on the Consulate General was involved. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said that the exact background of the crime is still unclear, but the fact that the perpetrator parked directly near the consulate and walked around the building with a rifle indicates a planned attack.

Markus Söder, the Bavarian Prime Minister, showed that there could be a connection to the anniversary of the 1972 Olympic attack. He emphasized that it was still to be clarified what is behind this worrying act and at the same time praised the quick and prudent response from the police, which could have prevented worse.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) expressed his gratitude for the rapidly initiated measures of the emergency services and emphasized the need to counteract anti -Semitism and Islamism on platform X. This underlines the important role of the security authorities and urgency to recognize and neutralize such threats.
