A fascinating project: Students of the Friedrich Ebert-Realschule discover the stratosphere with a weather balloon

The students of the Friedrich Ebert-Realschule in Hamm have recently successfully completed an exciting and innovative project. With the help of a weather balloon, they reached the stratosphere, a height of 37,000 meters that offered them a unique view of the earth. This extraordinary project was carried out by class 7b and a 9th physics course under the direction of physics teacher Hendrik Schlaak.

The students used a special kit to construct a probe that was equipped with various measuring instruments and a camera. The probe was transported to the stratosphere by a large helium balloon, where it collected impressive images and scientific data. The measured minimum outside temperature was -46ºC, while the balloon reached impressive speeds of up to 180 km/h.

Community engagement and interest in natural sciences

The project was financed by the generous support of Westfalen-AG and the German Physical Society. The school completed insurance to cover possible damage from the balloon flight. The knowledge gained from the project has already been integrated into the lessons in order to bring the students closer to the fascinating aspects of physics.
