Hot autumn start in NRW: up to 31 degrees and thunderstorm warning!

Despite the official approach of the meteorological autumn on September 1st, the weather in North Rhine-Westphalia surprisingly remains summery. The temperatures reach up to 31 degrees Celsius in some regions, but at the same time the German Weather Service (DWD) announces an ongoing weather transition that is characterized by violent thunderstorms and possible super cells.

in Hamm, where the temperatures are expected to rise up to 28 degrees on weekends, many citizens feel uncomfortable due to the continuing heat. The graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung von Wetter.net comments on the current conditions: "Many sweating, many are too warm". This August has proven to be one of the warmest since the beginning of the weather records in 1881. The meteorological autumn, which begins on Sunday, does not seem to have an effect on the weather, rather it seems as if the summer has returned.

Hitze alarm in North Rhine-Westphalia

The DWD warns of a strong heat load that will be felt on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in several cities and circles in North Rhine-Westphalia. This warning applies in particular to the densely populated urban areas, which increases the heat sensations. The affected areas include Cologne, Düsseldorf and Gelsenkirchen, as well as numerous surrounding counties.

The weather service emphasizes that it will not only stay hot in the coming days, but also the likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rain increases. "For Sunday, heavy rain between 15 and 25 liters per square meter is rather low," reports Jung. However, if the air humidity continues to increase, this could lead to complex weather phenomena that call meteorologists as "super cells", which indicates serious and unpredictable thunderstorms.

A look into the future

On Monday it could already be vigorous, which entails other thunderstorms and heavy rains. "The weather will start to boil," explains Jung. In the further course of the week, the weather conditions remain inconsistent. According to the current DWD outlook, the temperatures are still warm, but it remains restless due to shower and thunderstorms. It is only after a phase of changeable weather with a return to calm, warm late summer weather.

The prevailing weather conditions and the upcoming change make it clear that the summer temperatures in North Rhine-Westphalia have great joy and some challenges. The sudden change from heat to potential storms requires adaptability and caution from the citizens.
